There are very few things that can move the soul the way that art does. Whether your inclination is through photography, music, or painting murals, there are things art can speak to that words fail to do. For Leobel Ledesma, art created a path to deep connection, not just with himself, but with those around him.
Through art, the first-generation New York City-born Dominican found his passion and calling as it opened the world to him in ways he could have never imagined. Art helped him find community. Art helped him find grace.

“In my journey, I’ve learned that pursuing your passion often brings unexpected opportunities,” he tells Latinidad Collective.
Like any other United States-born man, sports dominated the early parts of his life. Ledesma notes that while he was “consumed” by sports, he was always “surrounded by creative influences.”
Art became a vehicle for communication, connection, and an overall better mental state for Ledesma
“It wasn’t until I was about six years old that I discovered art as a means of connecting with my father, sparking a newfound passion. Experimenting with painting murals at home and designing art soon turned into a business, [and I was] selling pieces to friends,” he explains.

Tapping into his artistry allowed him to find a way of expressing himself and his thoughts. It also aided him on his journey of “self-discovery.”
Ledesma tells Latinidad Collective, “Engaging in art offers significant benefits for mental health, providing a means to express emotions, promote mindfulness, and encourage self-discovery. Personally, art has been a therapeutic outlet, boosting my self-esteem and facilitating social connections.”
Art also helped him find his voice and learn how to navigate the challenges and adversities he would encounter. But, Ledesma knew that the benefits of art could be scaled and used to help out the many and not just the few.
Ledesma wants to leverage the power of shared community spaces to help bring art to people everywhere
Understanding the power and advantages that come with recreational spaces, the Dominican American created The Anointed Artistry Project. The initiative aims to foster community cohesion, rejuvenate underprivileged areas, and instill hope in the urban landscape.
“These spaces served as hubs for social interaction, fun, and personal development. Growing up surrounded by such spaces, I learned the importance of good company and positive experiences,” the New York City native adds.

So, why now? Ledesma credits fatherhood as his motivator.
“Parenthood reminded me of the simple joys of outdoor play and meaningful interactions with my children. The Anointed Artistry Project is a response to this, aiming to reignite human connection, bring pride to communities, and promote safety and engagement in public spaces,” he adds.
Ledesma tells Latinidad Collective that his children “reinforced the significance of these spaces” and reminded him of the deep connection it can develop within communities — something art can also do.

The Dominican American founder hopes The Anointed Artistry Project drives inclusive change for everyone involved
Ledesma wants to create a better world for everyone with his project. His goal is to bring in people from all walks of life to work on bringing more art into local communities.
“My vision for The Anointed Artistry Project is to be a driving opportunity for the community to participate in the design and evolution of their communities. I see individuals of all backgrounds actively involved, not just as participants but as co-creators of their own calling,” he adds.
He concludes, “Ultimately, I believe this project holds the power to showcase talents, inspire fresh perspectives, and foster a collective vision for greater ideas and actions.”
