The road less traveled can be rewarding and challenging. In a world where unexpected twists often lead to remarkable transformations, Melissa Gallardo‘s journey into a thriving entrepreneur with her candle business is impressive.
Bonita Fierce Candles is a testament to the power of adaptability and cultural resonance. Whether showcasing her candles at a trade show or giving a keynote speech at Standford University, her dedication to her craft is palpable.
Gallardo tells Latinidad Collective, “I’ve always wanted to be a trailblazer in some kind of space, and for me, it has led to the home fragrance space and the home space. I really want to leave a legacy where people feel appreciated [and] where people feel like they are represented.”
Ultimately, the Latina entrepreneur wants others to know that “representation comes in different ways and forms.”
Like most business owners, the candle entrepreneur just fell into it
Before the pandemic, her path into entrepreneurship would have been deemed something unconventional. But, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, Gallardo, like many, got the necessary push to pivot into a space that spoke to her soul.
“I expected myself to be in the corporate world in media. I studied media in undergrad, and I was really preparing a career there. Only when the pandemic hit is when I really started to reevaluate things,” she explained.
While she had her sights on climbing the corporate ladder, Gallardo still had the spirit of an entrepreneur deep within her. She cited how, pre-pandemic, she was looking to start a side hustle “to make more money on the side.”

“I want to be able to show other entrepreneurs and other up-and-coming entrepreneurs that it’s possible to reinvent the wheel. Not in the way you think, by innovating a completely new invention or product, but the way we see product.”

The home fragrance emprendadora explained that she commuted two hours daily to New York City before switching to remote work. She credits the pandemic for helping her reclaim her time and explore her passions beyond the confines of traditional employment.
What began as a simple side hustle to supplement her income quickly became more significant. Not only did Bonita Fierce Candles quickly turn into a “full-blown business,” but it also helped her express her need to reclaim her heritage.
“What I really least expected was it to be a full-blown business [with] me ending up quitting my job — really hating the corporate world — and just diving right into entrepreneurship,” she remarks.
Bonita Fierce Candles helped give Gallardo the space she needed to connect with her culture safely
For the Latina, Bonita Fierce Candles is more than just a business — it is a celebration of her cultural heritage and a platform for authentic expression. Drawing inspiration from her Latina roots, she sought to infuse her candles with a sense of identity and belonging lacking in the mainstream market.

“I want to be able to show other entrepreneurs and other up-and-coming entrepreneurs that it’s possible to reinvent the wheel. Not in the way you think, by innovating a completely new invention or product, but the way we see product,” she remarks.
Gallardo emphasizes that she wants others to feel empowered to stand in their culture and beliefs. She wants them to remember that they can take up space “being exactly who we are.”
Motivated to fill this void and amplify underrepresented voices, she curated a collection of scents that paid homage to her cultural upbringing. From the rich aroma of coquito to the comforting embrace of cafecito con leche, each fragrance served as a bridge between past and present, tradition and innovation.
By blending traditional scents with contemporary sensibilities, Gallardo created candles and curated experiences that resonated with diverse audiences. She honored her heritage and fostered a sense of community and connection among her customers.

Another critical element of Gallardo’s brand is her unapologetic authenticity on social media
In an era dominated by curated feeds and filtered realities, the Bonita Fierce Candles’ founder remains steadfast in her commitment to authenticity online. Recognizing the transformative power of transparency, she endeavors to share the unfiltered truth behind the scenes of entrepreneurship.
Gallardo adds, “So much of social media is just, you know, screaming out your accomplishments and what you’ve done and what you’ve built. And of course, I’m always going to say them like, you know, always say like ‘first Latino-owned brand to do X, Y, Z to launch at all these retailers,’ and those are the things that we always share. But some of the, you know, 90% of the time — do you know how hard it was to build it?”
Whether documenting the challenges of managing inventory or showcasing creative solutions to logistical hurdles, her candid approach offers a rare glimpse into the realities of running a business.
By embracing vulnerability and showcasing the highs and lows of her entrepreneurial journey, Gallardo seeks to inspire others to pursue their passions fearlessly. She hopes to empower aspiring entrepreneurs to navigate the unpredictable terrain of business ownership with resilience and grace.
“I’ve always wanted to be a trailblazer in some kind of space, and for me, it has led to the home fragrance space and the home space. I really want to leave a legacy where people feel appreciated [and] where people feel like they are represented.”

Gallardo notes how creativity is par for the course and references a time when she and her family had to find a way to push “1,800 pounds of wax” up her inclined driveway. They used a car.
By embracing her identity and sharing her story authentically, she has built a successful business and ignited a movement of empowerment and inspiration within her community and beyond.
“There’s tons of work behind the scenes that just needs to be said because it’s not easy. But also it’s possible. Like these things are a possibility for other people to do,” she concludes.
